St Michael's Pool Emergency Action Plan

EVACUATION OF POOL

The pool must be cleared immediately on the following occasions:

  1. Lack of water clarity (ie. the drain cover appears blurred).

  2. Serious injury of a bather.

  3. Discover of a casualty in the water.

  4. Onset of darkness (ie. lighting up time/just before sunset).

Evacuation may also need to be considered for the following if appropriate:

  1. Disorderly behaviour.

  2. Structural failure.

  3. Emmision of toxic gases.

  4. Lighting failure.

MINOR EMERGENCIES: NON-LIFE THREATENING
  1. Remove casualty from the pool either by the use of poles to carry out a reaching rescue or by entering the water and, if appropriate, take to hospital or call an ambulance.

  2. Carry out First Aid. The pool must not be left unsupervised while dealing with the casualty. If necessary clear the pool of bathers. After the emergency, report to the Headteacher, complete the Accident Report Form and if necessary Parent Advice Form kept in the school office. Arrange for the First Aid Box to be replenished.

MAJOR EMERGENCIES: SERIOUS INJURY OR LIFE THREATENING SITUATION

  1. Serious Injury - Clear the pool of bathers, clear the pool and without aggravating the injury bring the casualty out of the pool. If this cannot be achieved bring the casualty to the side of the pool and support. Reassure the casualty and await emergency services. Bathers must be instructed to dry and put their clothes on. After the emergency report to the Headteacher and complete the Accident Report and Parent Advice Forms. Arrange for the First Aid Kit to be replenished.

  2. Life Threatening Situation - Immediately clear the pool of bathers, arrange for an ambulance to be summoned using 999 and at the same time commence EAR/ECC. Bathers must be instructed to dry and put their clothes on. After the emergency, report the incident to the Headteacher and complete the Accident Report and Parent Advice Forms.
